In a recent publication, Bulkamid injections for SUI were found to be efficacious, safe and durable. The January 2021 issue of Neurourology and Urodynamics reports 7-year outcomes in 388 patients. Positive results of this minimally invasive option include 81% of patients being satisfied with no alternative treatment sought. 67% of patients were cured or greatly improved with Bulkamid when performed as a primary procedure. In regards to safety, there were no occurrences of acute urinary retention, urgency/de novo urgency, injection sire pain or hematuria. 15.3% of patients reported prolonged bladder emptying and 3.5% had a UTI. Overall, the study shows a large volume of women well managed over years when Bulkamid injections were utilized as a 1st line treatment for SUI. The procedure is less intimidating compared to placement of a surgical sling and the over 97% water composition is more appealing compared to a traditional mesh foreign body.
